SUPERNOVA IN NGC 7184
     G. M. Hurst, Basingstoke, England, writes that R. O. Evans'
presumed supernova (IAUC 3962, but see also IAUC 3994 and 3995)
was photographed by A. Young, Burwash, on July 28, Aug. 28 and
Sept. 22, during which time the object faded from mpv ~ 14.5 to
mpv ~ 15.5. Measurements by P. Birtwhistle, Godstone, give the
position as R.A. = 21h59m58s24, Decl. = -21deg02'22"9 (equinox 1950.0).
The offset from the galaxy's nucleus is 68"7 east, 53"6 north.
The object is not identical with Tatum's, which is located 1"5 to
the west and 12"2 to the north. Evans himself writes that he has
been informed that a low-dispersion spectrogram obtained at the
Anglo-Australian Observatory on July 31 suggests that the object
was a heavily obscured type I supernova, and that a spectrogram
obtained with the 5-m Palomar reflector appears to confirm this,
but no official word has been received of these observations.

1984 November 26 (4013) Brian G. Marsden
