PERIODIC COMET HALLEY (1982i)
J. V. Wall and R. Argyle, Royal Greenwich Observatory, report
that short-exposure CCD observations at the prime focus of the
Isaac Newton 2.5-m reflector at Roque de los Muchachos on July
29.24 UT gave V = 16.2 in an aperture of 8", although some low-
surface-brightness luminosity may have been lost due to the bright
sky. There was a possible extension of the image to the southwest.
H. Hammel and D. P. Cruikshank report that inspection of CCD
images obtained with the Mauna Kea 2.24-m telescope on Aug. 5.6 UT
reveals a suspected narrow jet at position angle 220-230. The
slightly curved feature is approximately 6" long and is not
precisely radial to the nuclear condensation. Three different
exposures (2-5 min each) through a 702-nm filter show the feature over
a 20-min interval. Seeing determined from stellar images was 1"0.
Total visual magnitude estimates: July 27.48 UT, 15.0: (C. S.
Morris and S. Edberg, Table Mountain Observatory, 0.61-m f/16
Cassegrain reflector, 390 x; coma diameter 10", very diffuse); 28.12,
14.0: (M. Verdenet, Bourbon-Lancy, France, 0.35-m reflector);
28.48, 15.0: (Edberg and Morris); 30.11, 14.0: (Verdenet); Aug.
10.48, 14.5 (Morris, Edberg and A. Hale; coma diameter 18");
11.48, 14.5 (Morris); 12.48, 14.3 (Morris and Hale); 17.34, 14.1
(J. Bortle, Springfield, VT, 0.61-m reflector); 18.48, 13.9: (A.
Hale, Dawson Saddle, CA, 0.20-m reflector); 19.49, 13.9 (Hale).
