PERIODIC COMET HALLEY (1982i)
     D. Bockelee-Morvan, G. Bourgois, J. Crovisier and E. Gerard,
Observatoire de Paris, Meudon, and Nancay Radio Telescope, telex
that the OH radical was detected in P/Halley with the Nancay radio
telescope in late Aug. Both transitions at 1667 MHz and 1665 MHz
were observed in emission with a signal-to-noise ratio of 6-sigma at
1667 MHz. For the period Aug. 22-Sept. 3 the average production
rate is derived as 1.1 x 10**28 molecules/s (8.4 x 10**28 when reduced
to 1 AU, assuming an r**-2 law). The 1667 MHz signal strength was
increasing during the observing period.

Total visual magnitude estimates: Aug. 14.12 UT, 15.2 (J.-C.
Merlin, Le Creusot, France, 0.40-m reflector); 14.12, 14.5+ (M.
Verdenet, Bourbon-Lancy, France, 0.35-m reflector; July 28-30
observations considered questionable); 18.12, 14.5: (R. Fleet,
Harare, Zimbabwe, 0.35-m reflector); 21.49, 13.9 (C. S. Morris,
Dawson Saddle, CA, 0.25-m reflector); 23.39, 13.4 (J. DeYoung, Troy,
VA, 0.25-m reflector); 25.45, 13.6 (R. Keen, Mt. Thorodin, CO,
0.32-m reflector); 28.08, 13.4 (Merlin); Sept. 11.10, 12.8 (F.
Bertucci and M. Cavagna, Valcava, Italy, 0.4-m reflector); 12.49,
13.2 (Morris, Mt. Wilson, CA, 0.25-m reflector).

IRAS 17208-0014
     L. Bottinelli, L. Gouguenheim, and A. M. le Squeren, Observatoire
de Paris, Meudon; M. Dennefeld, Institut d'Astrophysique,
Paris; and G. Paturel, Observatoire de Lyon, telex: "A new strong
extragalactic OH megamaser has been discovered with the Nancay
radio telescope in the uncatalogued infrared source IRAS 17208-
0014, which is identified with a galaxy. A spectrum obtained at
the European Southern Observatory reveals low-excitation emission
lines at heliocentric velocity 12 730 (+/- 90, m.e.) km/s. The
galaxy is a strong infrared emitter with a luminosity of a few x
10**12 LO. Both the 1667- and 1665-MHz main lines are detected,
with an isotropic luminosity at 1667 MHz of ~ 1200 LO (for the
adopted distance of 170 Mpc). A wide H I absorption line with no
emission counterpart has been also detected at Nancay."

AG DRACONIS
Visual magnitude estimates by J. Bortle, Stormville, NY: July
14.1 UT, 9.9; Aug. 10.1, 9.9.
