PERIODIC COMET HALLEY (1982i)
     Yu. N. Gnedin, Yu. K. Bergner, A. A. Krivtsov, A. S. Miroshnichenko,
R. V. Yudin, and N. Yu. Yutanov, Pulkovo Observatory; and
K. G. Dzhakusheva, K. S. Kuratov, and D. B. Mukanov, Astrophysical
Institute of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, report their
photoelectric observations with a 1-m telescope (aperture 40", chopper
distance 80") of the head of P/Halley: Oct. 1.96 UT, V = 12.91 +/-
0.04, U-B = -0.03 +/- 0.06, B-V = +0.68 +/- 0.07, V-R = +0.39 +/- 0.10,
R-I = +0.41 +/- 0.13; Oct 8.99, V = 12.67 +/- 0.04, B-V = +0.62 +/- 0.07,
V-R = +0.61 +/- 0.10, R-I = +0.43 +/- 0.13; Nov. 5.89, V = 10.52 +/-
0.01, U-B = -0.22 +/- 0.02, B-V = +0.76 +/- 0.01, V-R = +0.35 +/- 0.03,
R-I = +0.50 +/- 0.03, V-J = +2.62 +/- 0.02, V-H = +4.31 +/- 0.03, V-K =
+4.52 +/- 0.05; Nov. 5.89, V = 12.96 +/- 0.01, U-B = -0.42 +/- 0.06, B-V
= +0.58 +/- 0.06, V-R = +0.38 +/- 0.11, R-I = +0.53 +/- 0.08 (centered on
area 80" south of the nucleus); Dec. 4.63, V = 9.09 +/- 0.01, U-B =
-0.05 +/- 0.02, B-V = +0.60 +/- 0.01, V-R = +0.34 +/- 0.01; Dec. 4.63, V
= 10.81 +/- 0.03, U-B = +0.02 +/- 0.05, B-V = +0.66 +/- 0.03, V-R = 0.00
+0.03 (centered on area 80" south of the nucleus).

     I. Ferrin, Department of Physics, University of the Andes,
Merida, communicates that IIa-O plates taken by him, O. Naranjo and
R. Telleria with the 1-m f/3 Schmidt telescope of the National
Observatory of Venezuela show a tail of length ~ 1.5 deg (~ 4 x 10**6 km)
and a tail feature that could be followed and measured on 3 plates.
The resulting velocities (+/- 10 km/s) were 64.4 km/s on Dec. 10.0851
UT and 66.7 km/s on Dec. 10.1321, with no apparent acceleration.
The feature departed from the nucleus near Dec. 9.75 and may
represent a disconnection event.

Further total visual magnitude estimates: Dec. 15.02 UT, 6.1
(W. I. Nissen, Warrenton, VA, 7x50 binoculars); 16.04, 5.7 (Nissen,
Takoma Park, MD); 16.95, 4.4 (D. W. E. Green, Cambridge, MA, 7x50
binoculars); 18.96, 4.3 (Green); 19.96, 4.4 (Green).

NOTICE CONCERNING TELEGRAMS
It is once again an 'open season' for making changes in the
list of subscribers to the Central Bureau's telegram service.
Subscribers who wish to make address changes, category changes, etc.,
are requested to inform us of said changes by 1986 Jan. 31. We
regret that a charge of $50.00 must be made for address changes and
deletions (but not additions) outside these biannual seasons.

1985 December 20 (4152) Daniel W. E. Green
