PERIODIC COMET WILD 3 (1987e)
T. Gehrels and J. V. Scotti, University of Arizona, report
their recovery of this comet with the 0.91-m SPACEWATCH telescope
at Kitt Peak as shown below. The Jan. 29 image is diffuse
with a 14" coma; the coma size was 16" on Feb. 1. The correction
to the prediction on MPC 10521 (by S. Nakano) is Delta-T = +0.79 day.

NOVA HERCULIS 1987
H. Kosai, Tokyo Astronomical Observatory, reports that a
spectroscopic observation by Y. Norimoto at Okayama Station on Jan.
30.87 UT showed strong H-alpha emission. Kosai also provides his
measurement of a Tri-X film exposure (obtained Jan. 28.85 using a 35-
mm camera + 135-mm telephoto lens) by M. Sugano: R.A. = 18h41m26.7, Decl.
= +15 16'16" (equinox 1950.0). The following visual magnitude
estimates have been reported: Jan. 31.24, 7.8 (G. Hurst, Basingstoke,
England); 31.715, 7.4 (R. Monella, Covo, Italy); Feb. 1.24, 7.8
(Hurst); 1.178, 7.6 (Monella); 2.194, 7.7 (Monella).
LMC X-3
A. Treves, L. Maraschi, and E. G. Tanzi, Milan; R. Falomo,
Padua; and P. Bouchet, European Southern Observatory, La Silla,
report: "LMC X-3 was observed with the International Ultraviolet
Explorer at Vilspa on Jan 9.5 UT, yielding a flux at 150 nm of 7 x
10E-15 erg/cm**2/s/A. The continuum in the 130-190-nm range is well
described by a power law of index alpha-sub-lambda = -1. Comparing with
observations on 1986 Mar. 8 (Treves et al. 1986, ESA SP-263, 451), we
find that the intensity has increased by a factor of two around
140 nm. The most prominent emission line is N V (124.8 nm; equivalent
width 1.7 nm). Optical infrared observations obtained at La
Silla indicate an intermediate brightness state with V = 17.1, J =
16.9, H = 17.1, and K = 16.5 +/- 0.2."
