PERIODIC COMET BORRELLY (1987p)
     A. C. Gilmore and P. M. Kilmartin, Mount John University
Observatory, report their recovery of this comet as follows:

      1987 UT              R.A. (1950) Decl.            m2
      June  5.72721      0 33 04.49     -29 08 06.5     19
            5.76182      0 33 08.25     -29 08 03.0
            7.75257      0 36 55.50     -29 06 01.4     19

The object is diffuse with condensation and precisely in the
position predicted on MPC 11527 (elements MPC 10522).

SUPERNOVA 1987A IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD
     J. A. Bailey, R. D. Cannon and M. S. Cropper, Anglo-Australian
Observatory, telex: "We obtained CCD spectropolarimetry (resolution
0.15 nm, typical accuracies about 0.05 percent) on May 5 and June 3.
Extensive structure in the polarization spectrum is now present.
Polarization peaks with typical widths of 3-5 nm (FWHM) are associated
with the absorption troughs or just blueward of the emission
peaks. The main features observed on June 3 in observations covering
544-686 and 822-905 nm are as follows: 586.0 nm, peak polarization
1.0 percent in p.a. 5 deg; 611.0, 0.8 in 100; 645.0, 2.2 in 15;
651.5, 1.1 in 20; 838.0, 3.4 in 105.  The main peaks in polarized
flux (as opposed to percentage polarization) are at 588.0,
655.0 and 866.5 nm and have FWHM of 5-7 nm. The continuum polarization
dropped from about 0.5 percent on May 5 to about 0.1 percent on
June 3. The polarization features associated with H alpha decreased in
width and increased in strength from May 5 to June 3."
     Visual magnitude estimates: June 3.34 UT, 3.2 (D. A. J.
Seargent, The Entrance, N.S.W.); 4.56, 3.3 (R. H. McNaught,
Coonabarabran, N.S.W.); 5.79, 3.1 (McNaught); 6.39, 3.2 (A.
Beresford, Adelaide, S. Australia); 7.36, 3.3 (Beresford).

NOVA SAGITTARII 1987
     Visual magnitudes: May 29.45 UT, 11.2 (D. A. J. Seargent, The
Entrance, N.S.W.); 30.42, 11.3 (Seargent); June 1.10, 10.9 (A.
Pereira, Linda-A-Velha, Portugal); 2.40, 11.6 (Seargent); 3.39, 11.7
(Seargent); 4.81, 11.3 (R. H. McNaught, Coonabarabran, N.S.W.);
5.44, 11.6 (McNaught); 6.81, 11.5 (McNaught).
