X-RAY SELECTED CATACLYSMIC VARIABLES
J. Grindlay, Center for Astrophysics; H. Cohn and P. Lugger,
Indiana University; and P. Hertz, Naval Research Laboratory,
report: "As part of a program to identify low luminosity x-ray
sources detected in the Einstein galactic plane survey (Hertz and
Grindlay 1984, Ap.J. 278, 137), we have identified three serendipitous
Einstein Observatory x-ray sources with cataclysmic variables
(CVs). They are 1E 0830.9-2238 (R.A. = 8h30m54s.1, Decl. = -22 38'15",
V = 17.7, B-V = +0.3, U-B = -0.6), 1E 1449.8-6803 (R.A. = 14h49m47s.5,
Decl. = -68 04'04", V = 18.1, B-V = +0.1, U-B = -1.3) and 1E 1516.6
-6827 (R.A. = 15h16m42s.8, Decl. = -68 27'39", V = 17.5, B-V = +0.6, U-B =
-1.3). Positions are for equinox 1950.0 and have uncertainties of
about 1". Magnitudes and colors were measured in CCD observations with
the 4-m telescope at CTIO in 1985 Jan. and May, whereas spectroscopic
identification as CVs was made by Grindlay and Cohn in CTIO
4-m observations during 1987 May 1-4. All three sources show
strong Balmer series in emission. 1E 0830.9-2238 shows strong He
II 468.6-nm in emission and may be an AM-Her-type star. The other
two show lower ionization, including He I 447.1 nm, and can be
classified as novalike. From their x-ray fluxes and the H beta
equivalent width-absolute magnitude relation we estimate their distances
as about 1 kpc. These three objects are the first sources identified
from a class of x-ray selected cataclysmic variables postulated
by Hertz and Grindlay. Further observations to determine CV
subclass and period are encouraged."
