SUPERNOVA 1987A IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD
     U. G. Briel, E. Pfeffermann, B. Aschenbach, H. Brauninger and
J. Trumper, Max-Planck-Institut fur Extraterrestrische Physik,
write: "We searched for soft x-ray emission (0.2-2.1 keV) in SN
1987A on Aug. 24.69 UT using an imaging telescope with a position-
sensitive proportional counter on a sounding rocket flight from
Woomera, Australia. No signal was detected from the supernova
within a 1'.5-square detection cell during the 220-s observation,
corresponding to an upper limit of 0.16 mCrab (95 percent confidence).
Assuming an absorption column density of 4 x 10**20 cm-2,
this countrate is equivalent to 10**-12 erg cm-2 s-1 keV-1 at 1 keV
(95 percent confidence) or 1.5 x 10**36 erg/s in soft x-rays for a
source temperature between 0.1 and 10 keV, or a source power-law
spectrum with a photon number index between 0 and -3."
     E. P. Ney, University of Minnesota, communicates the following
photometric observations, made by T. F. Flowers with the
Australian National University's O.41-m reflector at Siding Spring
Observatory around the time of maximum light (uncertainty +/- 0.03
in V and B-V, +/- 0.07 in U-B): May 20.39, V = 3.06, B-V = +1.32,
