W. G. Weller and S. R. Heathcote, Cerro Tololo Interamerican
Observatory, telex: "Low-dispersion spectra (range 350-710 nm,
resolution 0.5 nm) were obtained on May 5.4 UT with the 2D-Frutti
photon-counting system on the Yale 1.0-m telescope. The spectrum is
dominated by the Balmer series, lines being clearly detected down to
H9. Except for H alpha, all the Balmer lines exhibit P-Cyg profiles
with a strong emission component and a weak violet absorption. The
Balmer decrement, measured by integrating the flux over the whole line
profile, including the absorption dip, is H alpha: H beta: H gamma:
H delta: H epsilon = 690:100:29:13.8:7.6. The corresponding quantity
for the emission component alone is 680:100:30:16:9.8. Permitted
lines corresponding to various multiplets of Fe II, the strongest of
them being at 492.4, 501.8 and 516.9 nm (multiplet 42), are seen, as
is He I 587.6 nm. Higher-dispersion spectra (range 390-510 nm,
resolution 0.2 nm) were obtained at the same time with the CTIO 1.5-m
telescope using a GEC CCD as detector. The emission component of the
Balmer lines has a heliocentric velocity of -32 +/- 10 km/s and FWHM
1025 +/- 10 km/s. The principal violet absorption component has a
velocity of -1340 +/- 10 km/s for the H I line and -1285 +/- 10 km/s
for the Fe II lines; the mean FWHM is 360 km/s. A second,
significantly weaker, absorption dip ia seen at a velocity of -790
km/s for the H I lines and at -680 km/s for Fe II. Further additional
absorption dips are seen in the peaks of H beta and H delta at a
velocity of -135 km/s."
