SUPERNOVA 1988Q IN ANONYMOUS GALAXY
     C. M. Gaskell, University of Michigan, writes: "Spectra taken with
the McGraw-Hill Observatory 2.4-m telescope on July 13.5 UT show
that SN 1988Q (cf. IAUC 4623, 4625) is a type-II supernova, probably
3 or 4 weeks past maximum light. The redshift is 6600 km/s, the
FWHM of H-alpha is 9400 km/s, and the wings extend to +/- 11 000 km/s. The
continuum magnitude was 19.1 at 550 nm."

3C 279
     F. Makino and the Ginga Team, Institute of Space and Astronautical
Science, telex: "Ginga observed the quasar 3C 279 on July 6.
The x-ray energy flux was 12.7 +/- 0.2 erg s-1 cm-2 in the energy
range 2-30 keV with photon index of 1.57 +/- 0.05. The energy flux
and index on 1987 June 24 were 2.0 +/- 0.2 erg s-1 cm-2 and 1.7 +/- 0.1,
respectively. The flux errors are due to the confusion limit."

NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS
In response to various requests, arrangements have now been made
to e-mail (at no extra charge) the Computer Service (CS) versions of
these Circulars to CS subscribers who have SPAN or BITNET addresses
(or other e-mail addresses that can appropriately be reached via SPAN
or BITNET). Each CS account is eligible to receive a single e-mail
copy of each Circular, but we cannot arrange to retransmit issues that
are not delivered: to get missing issues subscribers will need to log
in to the CS in the usual way (or await delivery of the printed copy).
During the past week we have sent experimental e-mail copies of the
Circulars to those CS subscribers whose e-mail addresses we had on
file. If other CS subscribers wish to avail themselves of this new
service (or if the e-mail addresses we have selected need to be
changed), they should request this by e-mail to MARSDEN@CFA.BITNET or
MARSDEN@CFAPS2.SPAN. Non-CS subscribers who wish now to subscribe to
the CS are advised that the monthly charge for the CS is $7.50 at the
regular (invoiced) rate or $4.50 at the special (non-invoiced) rate;
this charge is in addition to that (also $7.50 regular rate, $4.50
special rate) for the printed Circulars, although subscribers may opt
to receive the printed MPCs instead (monthly charge $15.00 regular
rate, $9.00 special rate).
