SUPERNOVA 1987A IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD
H. Moseley, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center; E. Dwek, W. Glaccum,
J. Graham, R. Loewenstein and R. Silverberg report the results of far-
infrared spectrophotometry obtained on Nov. 17 and 24 using the Kuiper
Airborne Observatory. The observations cover the 16-30-micron spectral
range with spectral resolving power about 40. The spectrum reveals a
strong continuum that falls slightly from 16 to 28 microns with weak
emission from [Fe I], [Fe II] and [S I] fine-structure lines. The
continuum is about a factor of three stronger than in measurements made
in March, while the [Fe II] lines are a factor of 3 to 5 weaker than in
March. A similar increase in the 10-micron continuum and decline in
fine-structure lines in that spectral region were reported on IAUC 4645.
The ratio of [Fe I] to [Fe II] lines gives some evidence for a decrease
in ionization level, but the overall reduction in line strengths is much
greater than can be explained by this change in ionization.
