SUPERNOVAE 1989C AND 1989D
P. Wild, Astronomical Institute, Berne University, reports the
discovery of two supernovae on Feb. 3 (confirmed Feb. 4). SN 1989C,
at mpg = 14.5, is located at R.A. = 9h45m09.98, Decl. = +2 51'33".0
(equinox 1950.0), near the center of an anonymous Sc galaxy.
SN 1989D, at mpg = 16, is located at R.A. = 9h43m15.47, Decl. =
+73 12'09".2, which is 2" east and 23" north of the center of NGC 2963
= Mrk 122.
SUPERNOVA 1989B IN NGC 3627
S. Ryan and N. Visvanathan, Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring
Observatories, telex: "We have obtained a spectrum (range 440-700
nm) of SN 1989B on Jan. 31.6 UT with the Siding Spring 2.3-m telescope
(+ double-beam spectrograph, resolution 0.3 nm). We find the
continuum of the supernova to be bluer than the parent galaxy, NGC
3627, and dominated by broad absorption troughs (width approximately
20.0 nm). We could identify Si II (635.5, 505.1 nm), and possibly
Si I (545.4 nm), all blueshifted by about 10 000 km/s. There is
suggestion of P-Cyg profiles. Thus our data support the supernova's
being type Ia. If we adopt a distance modulus of -30.37 and an
apparent magnitude 13.0, the absolute magnitude of SN 1989B is derived
as -17.37, suggesting that it may not yet have reached maximum
brightness. A second observation, obtained on Feb. 1.6, shows no
major changes in the appearance of the spectrum."
