COORDINATED OBSERVATIONS OF ALGOL BINARIES
     E. Guinan and A. Gimenez write: "During Sept. 10-14, the
eclipsing binaries R Ara, U Cep, and Algol will be observed
continuously in the ultraviolet with the IUE satellite; U Cep also
will be monitored at x-ray wavelengths with Ginga. These binaries
represent the rapid, moderate, and final slow stages of mass
transfer and loss, respectively, in Algol binaries. This will be
a unique opportunity for studying mass flows and accretion, as well
as levels of surface activity, of these stars. To optimize this
unique observing opportunity, we solicit ground-based observations
of these stars during September and October. Standardized photometry,
polarimetry, spectroscopy (especially at H-alpha), and radio
observations will be vital in understanding these complicated
systems. In particular, red and infrared lightcurves of Algol and
U Cep will be important in locating regions of starspot activity
on their cooler components. Those interested in participating in
this observing campaign should contact Edward Guinan [Astronomy

OCCULTATION OF SAO 190531 BY (9) METIS ON 1989 AUGUST 6
     G. Blow, Carter Observatory, telexes the following reports
concerning this event (predicted by Wasserman et al. 1987, A.J. 94,
1364): "The occultation was observed photoelectrically by W. H.
Allen (Blenheim, New Zealand, 30-cm reflector; long. = +173 55',
lat. = -41 31'), with disappearance at 10h40m24s.2 UT and duration
15.0 s, and magnitude drop 1.12 in Johnson V. The event was timed
visually by J. Priestley (Pukerua Bay, N.Z., 20-cm reflector; long.
= +174 53'50".9, lat. = -41 01'56".6, h = 60 m), with disappearance
occurring at 10h40m20s.8 and reappearance at 10h40m33s.0, and by
P. Riley (Tawa, N.Z., 35-cm reflector; long. = +174 48'53", lat. =
-41 10'34", h = 76 m), with disappearance at 10h40m19s.3 and
reappearance at 10h40m34s.3. Occultations of duration 15 and 8 s
were also reported by M. George (Launceston, Tasmania) and P. Daalder
(40 km north of Launceston), respectively."
