POSSIBLE NOVA IN SAGITTARIUS
     E. Waagen, AAVSO, reports the discovery by William Albrecht,
Pahala, HI, of a possible nova located at R.A. = 18h04m29s, Decl.
= -22 05.4 (equinox 1950.0). Waagen notes that nothing appears at
that position to mag 14 on the Vehrenberg charts, and Albrecht finds
nothing to mag 20 on U.K. Infrared Telescope plates. Visual
magnitude estimates by Albrecht:  Sept. 3.291 UT, 10; 4.31, 10;
5.28, 10; 14.24, 11.7; 14.29, 11.7.

GX 1+4
     F. Makino and the Ginga Team, Institute of Space and Astronautical
Science, telex: "We report on recent Ginga observations of
GX 1+4 (4U 1728-24), an x-ray pulsar near the galactic center possibly
related to the 511-keV gamma-ray source (Leventhal et al. 1989,
Nature, 339, 36). Observations made on Aug. 27.5-27.9 UT found a
2- to 30-keV x-ray flux of about 12 mCrab, similar to that in March
1988 (1989, P.A.S.J., 42, in press).  Preliminary analysis gave a
heliocentric pulsation period P = 113.626 +/- 0.002 s.  Any instantaneous
period change-rate is within +/- 10E-7. Compared with previous
Ginga measurements (P = 110.233 +/- 0.003 s on 1987 Mar. 30
and 111.59 +/- 0.02 s on 1988 Mar. 27; Makishima et al. 1988, Nature,
333, 746), these results indicate that GX 1+4 has remained in the
state of steady spin-down at an average rate of 4.5 x 10E-8."

GK PERSEI
     Visual magnitude estimates (cf. IAUC 4831): Aug. 13.02 UT,
10.5 (M. Verdenet, Bourbon-Lancy, France); 18.96, 10.4 (S. Korth,
Monheim, W. Germany); 21.97, 10.3 (A. Pereira, Cabo da Roca, Portugal);
24.37, 10.2 (J. Griese, Rocky Hill, CT); 27.23, 10.7 (C. Spratt,
Victoria, BC); 30.00, 10.8 (A. Boattini, Piazzano, Italy); Sept.
2.13, 11.0 (J. E. Bortle, Stormville, NY); 6.01, 11.4 (P. Schmeer,
Bischmisheim, West Germany); 10.9, 12.0 (P. Sventek, Houston, TX).
