SUPERNOVA 1989R IN UGC 2912
     R. Kirshner and B. Leibundgut, Center for Astrophysics,
report that a spectrum (range 500-700 nm) of SN 1989R obtained
by J. Peters on Oct. 7 UT at the Whipple Observatory indicates an
unusual type-II supernova with a continuum magnitude near 550 nm
of 16, H-alpha emission with FWZI < 5000 km/s, and no P-Cyg
absorption at H-alpha.
     Further to IAUC 4871, J. Mueller communicates that the
spectrum taken on Oct. 5 by J. Mould and J. Nemec shows H-alpha
and H-beta emission; the Gunn g magnitude was 17.8 and the
redshift is z = 0.018.

PKS 0118-27
     R. Falomo, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, writes: "Low-
resolution spectra (400-760 nm) of the BL Lac object PKS 0118-27
were obtained with the European Southern Observatory 1.52-m
reflector (+ Boller and Chivens spectrograph + CCD) on Aug. 7, 10,
and 12. A narrow absorption feature (equivalent width = 0.2 nm)
at 436.5 nm was observed over a power-law continuum (alpha(lambda)
= -0.7; V = 16.1).  A tentative identification with Mg II (280.0
nm) yields an absorption redshift z = 0.56, and hence an absolute
magnitude Mv <= -27.1 (Ho = 50 km s-1 Mpc-1; deceleration
parameter qo = 0)."

NOVA SCUTI 1989
     Further photoelectric photometry (cf. IAUC 4868) by R.
Monella, Covo, Italy:  Oct. 1.787 UT, V = 9.92, B-V = +0.27,
U-B = -0.80; Oct. 2.778, 9.89, +0.21, -0.75.
     Visual magnitude estimates (cf. IAUC 4871): Oct. 5.13 UT,
9.8 (J. E. Bortle, Stormville, NY); 5.83, 10.3 (A. Boattini,
Florence, Italy); 6.80, 11.0 (M. Dionisi, Anzio, Italy); 7.84,
11.2 (A. Pereira, Cabo da Roca, Portugal); 8.84, 11.1 (Pereira);
9.85, 11.0 (S. Baroni, Milan, Italy); 10.84, 11.1 (Boattini);
11.06, 10.3 (G. Kronk, Troy, IL).

COMET HELIN-ROMAN-ALU (1989v)
     Total visual magnitude estimates: Oct. 5.88 UT, 12.7 (J.-C.
Merlin, Le Creusot, France, 0.40-m reflector); 7.28, 11.9 (C. S.
Morris, Pine Mountain Club, CA, 0.26-m reflector); 8.33, 11.5 (Morris).
