PERIODIC COMET SANGUIN (1989z)
B. Weller, Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory; R. Coker,
California Institute of Technology; and K. Meech, Institute for
Astronomy, report their recovery of this comet from observations
made with the CTIO Schmidt telescope using a prototype CCD camera.
The comet appeared stellar on all three nights of observation.
The following observations indicate a correction to the prediction
on MPC 12125 of Delta(T) = -0.37 day:
1989 UT R.A. (1950) Decl. m2
May 9.29708 16 34 38.23 + 0 34 56.3 22
10.24201 16 34 05.84 + 0 41 08.0

SUPERNOVA 1988ac IN NGC 3995
M. Richmond reports his discovery, using the Lick Observatory
Nickel 1-m telescope (+ CCD), of a supernova in NGC 3995 (R.A. =
11h55m10s, Decl. = +32 34'.3, equinox 1950.0). The object is located
17".3 west and 34".1 south of the galaxy's center and is superimposed
on an H II region in the galaxy's southern arm. Unfiltered magnitudes
(+/- 0.2 mag): 1988 Dec. 15 UT, [19; Dec. 30, 16.5; 1989 Jan. 15,
16.8; Jan. 29, 17.3; Mar. 15, 18.0?; Apr. 29, 18.3? The final two
magnitudes are questionable due to interfering light from the
surrounding H II region. A spectrum (range 390-710 nm, resolution
1-2 nm) of the location of the supernova was obtained on 1989 Nov.
8 by A. V. Filippenko and J. C. Shields, University of California at
Berkeley, using a CCD spectrograph on the Shane 3-m reflector at
Lick Observatory; no features directly attributable to a year-old
supernova were detected among the blue continuum and strong emission
lines of the underlying H II region.
