MWC 560
     R. E. Gershberg, Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, communicates:
"Yu. S. Efimov, Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, reports
that on Nov. 29 he performed UBVRI polarimetry of the unique object
MWC 560 (cf. Tomov et al. 1990, Nature 346, 637), which revealed
that its degree of linear polarization in the V band is about 0.4-
0.5 percent. Assuming the interstellar nature of this small
polarization and using the data on interstellar absorption and
polarization in the direction to MWC 560 (Mathewson et al. 1978, Bull.
Inform. Centre de Donnees Stellaires 14, 115), the upper limit for a
distance to the object is about 0.5-1.0 kpc and the interstellar
absorption in V is < 0.25 magnitude. These estimations restrict
MWC 560's absolute luminosity in this band by 0 to 1 mag, which is
much lower than that of V1343 Aql (= SS 433). Therefore, the
suggested similarity between these objects seems to be doubtful."
