Pollas, Observatoire de la Cote d'Azur, reports his discovery, on panchromatic film exposed on Dec. 7.77 UT, of a supernova of mag 18 in UGC 249. The supernova is located at R.A. = 0h23m34s.91, Decl. = +13 22'44".3 (equinox 1950.0), or 3".4 east and 7".7 north of the galaxy's center. There is a nearby star (mag 17) at R.A. = 0h23m36s, Decl. = +13 22'.1. A. V. Filippenko and J. C. Shields, University of California at Berkeley, report that a CCD spectrum (range 390-710 nm, resolution 1.5 nm) obtained under poor conditions on Dec. 12 UT with the Shane 3-m reflector at Lick Observatory shows that the object is probably a type-II supernova not long past maximum brightness. H-alpha has a P-Cyg profile, and broad Na D absorption is present. 1990 SQ Extension of ephemeris on IAUC 5137, from orbital elements on MPC 17449: 1990/91 R.A. (1950) Decl.
