PERIODIC COMET HALLEY (1986 III)
     E. Giraud, European Southern Observatory, communicates: "I
obtained two 15-min R exposures and a 20-min V exposure with the 2.2-m
ESO/Max-Planck-Institut telescope under photometric conditions on
Feb. 17.2 UT. The magnitude of the comet, measured in a diameter of
5", was V = 19.88, V-R = +0.59. The data were calibrated using 3
Landolt stars and a secondary calibrator of magnitude V = 21.37.
The error in V-R should be +/- 0.05. These data show that the comet
color is close to solar (possibly slightly redder)."
     A. Smette, ESO, La Silla, reports: "A 30-min spectrogram (range
350-550 nm, resolution 9.0 nm FWHM) was obtained with the New Technology
Telescope (NTT) on Feb. 22.14 UT, using a 9" slit. Reduction,
and subtraction to eliminate the contribution of a contaminating
star, yields a coma that presents a solar-type spectrum with no
obvious emission line, strongly suggesting a dust composition."
     O. Hainaut, ESO, La Silla; and R. M. West, ESO, Garching,
report: "CCD photometry under good photometric conditions (seeing
about 1") with the 3.6-m NTT at La Silla gives for P/Halley the
following preliminary magnitudes (within a 5".3 diameter) on Mar. 6.1
UT: V = 21.9, V-R = +0.5. The total magnitude is V about 19.3.
The coma shape is unchanged since Feb. 12 (cf. IAUC 5189)."
