4U 1543-47
     M. Della Valle and L. Pasquini, European Southern Observatory,
report: "We have observed the optical counterpart of the transient
x-ray source 4U 1543-47 (cf. IAUC 5504). Inspection of a CCD
spectrum (range 380-670 nm, resolution about 2.0 nm), obtained on May
1.3 UT with the 3.6-m telescope (+ EFOSC) at La Silla, reveals
shallow emission lines of H-alpha, N III (464 nm), and He II (469
nm), superimposed on a relatively strong continuum. The other
Balmer lines (H-beta, H-gamma, H-delta, H-epsilon) are clearly
visible in absorption. Strong interstellar Na D (589 nm), Ca II K
(393 nm), and the 624-nm band are present. CCD observations
obtained by J. Eisloffel (Max-Planck-Institut fur Astronomie,
Heidelberg) on May 3.2 UT with the ESO/MPI 2.2-m telescope give V =
14.6 and B-V = +0.7. The new optical brightening is comparable to
that observed by Pedersen et al. in 1983 (IAUC 3858)."
