GRO J0422+32
     C. R. Shrader, Computer Sciences Corporation; R. M. Wagner,
Ohio State University; and S. Starrfield, Arizona State University,
report: "We have made ultraviolet spectroscopic observations of
the apparent optical counterpart to GRO J0422+32 = GRS 0417+335 on
Aug. 16.62 UT using the International Ultraviolet Explorer short-
and long-wavelength spectrographs in low-resolution mode. Preliminary
analysis indicates a moderately reddened continuum superimposed
with emission lines of N V (124 nm; equivalent width 0.78 nm;
flux 2.05), C IV (155; 0.70; 3.73), and He II (164; 0.29; 1.43),
where the parenthetical flux is given in units of 10E-13 erg cmE-2
sE-1. Additionally, we report the following continuum flux
measurements, given in units of 10E-14 erg cmE-2 sE-1: 140 nm, 4.92
+/- 0.28; 180 nm, 4.06 +/- 0.24; and 270 nm, 3.27 +/- 0.17. From
the dust absorption feature at 220 nm, we estimate a color excess
of E(B-V) = 0.40 +/- 0.07. The de-reddened ultraviolet energy
distribution is approximated by an f(lambda) power law with index -2.0.
The general characteristics of the spectrum are similar to those of
a number of low-mass x-ray binaries observed by IUE; however, the
emission line strengths are noticeably weaker than those seen in
the outburst spectra of Nova Mus 1991 or Centaurus X-4. Using the
Fine Error Sensor, we measure magnitude V about 13.3. We measured
new source coordinates that are slightly discrepant with those
reported on IAUC 5588 and 5590; to within the about 2" accuracy of
the IUE offset-maneuver used to acquire the target, we find its
position to be R.A. = 4h18m29s.9, Decl. = +32 47'24" (equinox 1950.0)."
