1H 0857-242
     H. Barwig and W. Wimmer, Universitats-Sternwarte, Munchen; and
I. Bues, Remeis-Sternwarte, Bamberg, write: "Extensive high-speed
photometry of the newly-detected cataclysmic variable 1H 0857-242
(IAUC 5481) has been performed with the European Southern Observatory
1-m telescope at La Silla and the MCCP fiberoptic multichannel
photometer of the University of Munich. The star was in quiescence
(V = 15.0 +/- 0.5) during 1992 Dec. 26-1993 Jan. 1. It showed
intense flickering activity at an amplitude in B of 40-60 percent of
the mean brightness. On Jan. 2 UT, the object was found in
outburst, having brightened 2.7 mag in B and 2.8 mag in V. Four CCD
spectrograms obtained with the 1.52-m ESO telescope (+ Boller &
Chivens spectrograph; range 360-700 nm, resolution 0.2 nm) show
changes in flux and line structure. On Jan. 1.34, all the Balmer
and He I lines appear in emission at intermediate strengths. The
outburst spectrum of Jan. 2.34 reveals the Balmer lines with n >/=
5 as well as He I (447.2 nm) in pure absorption, whereas H-beta has
an emission core and H-alpha a P-Cyg profile. The two spectra of
Jan. 3.25 and 3.35 demonstrate a steep decrease in intensity in the
blue and a change from the absorption profiles via P-Cyg profiles
to emission features stronger than those of Jan. 1.34."
