COMET C/1995 O1 (HALE-BOPP)
D. Reuter and D. Jennings, Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA;
P. Sada, Monterrey Astronomical Consulting; K. Hinkle, S. Ridgway,
and L. Wallace, Kitt Peak National Observatory; and P. Bernath and
J. Waller, University of Waterloo, report the measurement of
infrared molecular-line fluorescence in comet C/1995 O1:
"Observations were made on Feb. 26.7, Mar. 27.6-27.9, and Mar.
28.6-28.9 UT using the Kitt Peak 2.1-m telescope (+ Phoenix
cryogenic grating spectrometer; spectral resolving power about
50 000). Lines ranging from P(7) to P(15) were observed in the
nu_1 band of OCS near 4.861 microns. We also observed six Q
branches of the nu_7 band of C_2H_6 near 3.344 microns.
Preliminary analysis of the line intensities indicates a rotational
temperature of < 120 K for both species. An emission feature at
about 3.354 microns was assigned to the R_1e(11.5) and R_2f(10.5)
lines of the 0-1 band of CH."
