COMET C/1997 L2 (SOHO)
     C. St. Cyr, Naval Research Laboratory, reports, for the SOHO-LASCO
Consortium (see IAUC 6669), the discovery of a faint comet in SOHO-LASCO
data by Shane Stezelberger last week. This comet was moving away from the
sun, and there is again some inconsistency between the data obtained with
the C2 and the C3 coronagraphs. The comet has no obvious tail. Positions
(apparent solar distance and position angle) have been measured by D. Lewis
(University of Birmingham), S. Paswaters, St. Cyr and Stezelberger.
These positions have been reduced to the J2000.0 earth-equatorial system
by G. V. Williams and are given in detail on MPEC 1997-M06. The following
is the approximate position on the first C2 image:

           1997 UT R.A. (2000) Decl. m1
           June 10.592 5 15.1 +23 48 5

This comet is clearly not a Kreutz sungrazer, and the rough parabolic
orbital elements below have been determined by the undersigned. The
comet is likely to be considerably fainter than suggested in the ephemeris.
