COMET GEHRELS (1973n)
The following positions have been received. They confirm the
general correctness of the elliptical elements on IAUC 2589.

     1973 UT R.A. (1950) Decl. m1 Observer
     Oct. 28.262 1 23.5 +10 28 16 Shao

C. Y. Shao (Harvard College Observatory, Agassiz Station). 20-cm
   astrograph. Very weak image.
M. Antal (Skalnate Pleso Observatory). Diffuse with condensation.

LR SAGITTARII?
Mr. F. M. Bateson writes in Roy. Astron. Soc. New Zealand Variable
Star Sect. Spec. Circ. No. S3 that the position of the nova reported
by Matchett (IAUC 2588) appears to correspond with that of
LR Sgr. He adds that the period given by Innes is probably too
short. A period of 367 days, instead of 274 days, gives a maximum
around 1973 Nov. 20.

     N. V. Vidal and A. J. Kalnajs, Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring
Observatories, confirm probable identity of the nova with LR Sgr
and correct their B-V measurement on Oct. 28.46 (IAUC 2588) to +1.6.

Mr. A. C. Gilmore, Carter Observatory, writes that photoelectric
observations by W. S. G. Walker at Auckland Observatory on
Oct. 26.4 UT gave V = 11.7, B-V = +1.7.

COMET KOHOUTEK (1973f)
Dr. S. van den Bergh reports that a (blue) plate exposed with
the 122-cm Schmidt telescope on Oct. 27 shows a structureless tail
some 40' long. Rather similar results were obtained by J. Young
and K. Halberg with the 15-cm refractor at Table Mountain Observatory
on Oct. 27, 28 and 30; visually m1 was 7.8 on Oct. 27.5 UT.

Spectroscopic observations by P. Benvenuti with the 182-cm reflector
at the Asiago Astrophysical Observatory on Oct. 26 showed
an intense continuum with C2 emission bands at 4737 A, 5165 A (most
prominent) and 5635 A. The spectral range was 4000-7000 A.

1973 November 5 (2590) Brian G. Marsden
