MX0656-07
     G. W. Clark, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, reports
that the SAS-3 Group has discovered an x-ray nova in Monoceros at a
position with an error circle (90-percent confidence) of radius 15'
centered on R.A. = 6h56m.3, Decl. = -7o07'.2 (equinox 1950.0); l = 220o.17,
b = -1o.66. The nova was observed during the first of a recent series
of scans along the galactic plane on Sept. 20.51 UT. It was not
detected during an earlier series of scans that terminated on Sept.
2.60 UT. The spectrum from 1.3 to 13 keV is comparable in hardness
to that of the Crab Nebula. The intensity varies by about 30 percent
on a timescale of 100 seconds, but its average value over the
period of an orbit has remained nearly constant for 4 days at 0.08
times the intensity of the Crab.

     G. D. Schmidt and J. R. P. Angel, Steward Observatory, report
that in a search for an optical counterpart a 20' field centered on
the x-ray coordinates was photographed using the 229-cm reflector.
Two red plates obtained in moonlight on Sept. 24.5 UT were compared
with the red Palomar Sky Survey plate. No new stars brighter than
magnitude 19 were apparent.

PERIODIC COMET WEST-KOHOUTEK-IKEMURA (1975b)
     L. Kohoutek, Hamburg Observatory, provides the following
precise positions. Measurer: M. Dieckvoss. Images of the comet could
not be located on plates taken on May 12.9 and 27.9 UT.

Special subscribers to these Circulars (those for which the
middle digit in the middle group of figures above the address label
is - as in the above example - a 2) are reminded that if the last
group of figures reads 2852 or less, then fewer than ten Circulars
remain in their subscriptions and it is time to renew. Renewal
rates are $8.00 for 50 issues or $16.00 for 100 issues.
