COMET HARTLEY (1982b)
     The following precise positions have been reported:

     1982 UT             R. A. (1950) Decl.        Observer
     Feb.  7.75149    12 34 58.33   - 7 40 08.4    Russell
           8.38015    12 36 45.45   - 7 57 36.6    McCrosky

K. S. Russell (Siding Spring).  U.K. 1.2-m Schmidt telescope.
   Short tail detected (also for IAUC 3663 observations).
R. E. McCrosky (Oak Ridge Observatory). 1.5-m reflector.
   Identification uncertain. Plate black; full moon.

     The following parabolic and representative elliptical orbits
have been determined for this comet by the undersigned. The orbital
eccentricity is very uncertain, but it seems likely that the
comet is a short-period one. The ephemeris is from the ellipse.

      T = 1982 Mar. 26.621       1982 Apr. 2.256 ET
  Peri. = 245.553                254.275
  Node  = 314.002                308.448        1950.0
  Incl. =   3.770                  2.922
      q =   1.28853                1.17870 AU
      e =   1.0                    0.59   (assumed)

     1982 ET     R. A. (1950) Decl.     Delta     r      m1
     Feb. 10    12 41.44    - 8 42.1    0.473   1.328   14.1
          15    12 56.56    -11 06.3
          20    13 12.83    -13 39.4    0.403   1.279   13.6
          25    13 30.37    -16 19.8
     Mar.  2    13 49.28    -19 05.0    0.350   1.238   13.1

COMET HARTLEY (1982c)
     K. S. Russell, U.K. Schmidt Telescope Unit, also provides the
following additional precise position for this comet, which, 1ike
comet 1982b, exhibits evidence of a short tail:

     1982 UT             R. A. (1950) Decl.
     Feb.  7.75149    12 37 42.97   - 7 58 15.8

     Computations by the undersigned indicate that the orbit of
this comet is very similar to that of comet 1982b.

1982 February 11               (3664)              Brian G. Marsden
