PERIODIC COMET TEMPEL 1 (1982j)
This comet has been recovered as shown below. The position
is in very close agreement with the ephemeris on MPC 7029.

T. Seki (Geisei). Short tail. Communicated by T. Urata.
E. Barker and E. Dutchover (McDonald Observatory). 2.7-m reflector.
Somewhat diffuse appearance. Spectrum shows continuum,
   possibly with weak CN emission.

PERIODIC COMET KOPFF (1982k)
This comet has been recovered by E. Barker and S. Odenwahn
with the 2.7-m McDonald reflector. Essentially stellar in
appearance, the comet is close to the ephemeris on MPC 7032.

A0538-66
     M. Pakull, Institut fur Astronomie und Astrophysik, Berlin:
M. Tarenghi, European Southern Observatory; and M. de Koolon and
J. van Paradijs, University of Amsterdam, report: "Photometric and
spectroscopic observations of the optical counterpart of the
recurrent x-ray transient A0538-66 with the Bochum, Dutch and 3.6-m
telescopes at La Silla suggest that the system recently had another
inactive state. The lightcurve covering several 16.7-day cycles
during the past two months shows no optical flares at the expected
times larger than 0.1 mag. The mean magnitude and colors
(V = 14.78, B-V = -0.21, U-B = -0.92) and the presence of H-apha
emission (higher Balmer lines are seen in absorption) are reminiscent
of the state observed in 1980 Nov. before the onset of optical
activity (Pakull and Parmar 1981, A. Ap. 102, L1). The last
recorded outburst was observed in 1982 May."

1982 December 22 (3757) Brian G. Marsden
