POSSIBLE NOVAE
W. Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile, reports his discovery of a
possible nova in Norma at R.A. = 16h09m51s0, Decl. = -53deg11'32"
(equinox 1950.0). The object was detected at mag 9.4 on Sept. 19.00 UT
but must have been fainter than mag 11.5 on Sept. 10.0.
E. P. Aksenov, Sternberg Astronomical Institute, reports that
N. E. Kurochkin has discovered a possible nova in Triangulum at R.A.
= 2h42m2, Decl. = +33deg19' (equinox 1950.0). The object was observed
at mpg = 15.0 on Sept. 11.96 UT.
OCCULTATION OF 14 PISCIUM BY (51) NEMAUSA
A preliminary report by D. W. Dunham, Computer Sciences
Corporation, indicates that extensive positive and meaningful
negative observations of this Sept. 11 event were made throughout the
southeastern United States. The northern limit was effectively
defined by M. Croom, who observed a 2s3 occultation at Yorktown,
VA. The longest reported chord, 13s5, by R. Melvin in central
North Carolina, corresponds to a diameter of 160 km for Nemausa.
The southernmost positive observation, by E. Seykora and others at
Greenville, NC, gave an 8s2 occultation. A few observers reported
secondary extinctions, but these are believed to be due to seeing
or transparency variations or photoelectric guiding errors.
