PERIODIC COMET CROMMELIN (1983n)
     H. Spinrad, P. Wehinger, S. Wyckoff and M. Belton obtained
spectra (range 450-790 nm, resolution ~ 1.5 nm) on Feb. 4.1 UT (r
= 0.80 AU, A = 1.14 AU) using the Kitt Peak National Observatory's
4-m telescope and cryogenic camera (800 x 800 pixel Texas Instruments
CCD detector), with the slit oriented along the comet's tail
axis (p.a. 60.4). Emission features observed in the coma include
strong bands of C2 (Delta-v = +1, 0, -1) and NH2 (13-0 through 5-0) and
a weaker CN (2-0) band. The emission features in the long-slit
CCD spectra were symmetrical about the coma center with no ion
features evident. No ion tail or dust tail was seen on the 4-m-
telescope television monitor.

Further total visual magnitude estimates: Feb. 2.00 UT, 9.6
(J. Bortle, Stormville, NY, 0.32-m reflector); 5.14. 9.2 (A. Hale,
Whitaker Peak, CA, 0.20-m reflector).
