PERIODIC COMET HALLEY (1982i)
     I. Appenzeller and G. Klare, Landessternwarte, Heidelberg-
Koenigstuhl, report detection of the Phillips band in the spectrum
of P/Halley, using the Caspec echelle spectrograph of the European
Southern Observatory's 3.6-m telescope at La Silla. Two high-
resolution (20 000), near-infrared (810-910 nm) spectrograms taken
Mar. 3.39 and 5.39 UT show at least 10 sharp emission lines which
coincide closely with wavelengths expected for low-level lines of
the (2,0) Phillips band of C2. Although various other (unidentified)
lines also contribute, at least part of the apparent band
head at 875 nm appears to be due to singlet emission of diatomic
carbon.

     P. Whitelock, South African Astronomical Observatory, telexes
the following infrared magnitudes obtained with the 0.75-m reflector
at Sutherland through a 36" aperture (170" chop): Feb. 26.13
UT, J = 3.88, H = 3.49, K = 2.94, L = 0.33; 28.13, 3.84, 3.47,
2.96, 0.31; Mar. 4.13, 5.04, 4.66, 4.40, 1.94.

Further total visual magnitude estimates: Mar. 7.12 UT, 3.0
(J. Campos, Durban, South Africa, naked eye); 8.42, 3.5 (W. I.
Nissen, Takoma Park, MD, 7x50 binoculars); 9.51, 3.2 (R. Keen, Mt.
Thorodin, CO, naked eye); 10.32, 2.7 (C. S. Morris, 10x50 binoculars);
12.40, 3.4 (D. W. E. Green, Duxbury Beach, MA, naked eye).
