POSSIBLE COMETS
R. H. McNaught, Siding Spring Observatory, communicates the
discovery by Malcolm Hartley of a possible comet on a single plate
taken with the 1.2-m Schmidt telescope. The object has a 2' tail
to the northwest. The direction of motion is uncertain:
1987 UT R.A. (1950) Decl. m1
Jan. 5.66764 9 39 47.43 - 8 29 51.4 17.5
5.73361 9 39 49.25 - 8 29 34.0
Carlos Torres, Department of Astronomy, University of Chile,
reports his discovery of a possible comet at Cerro El Roble, with
the following approximate positions available. The object is
described as diffuse with condensation and with a tail < 1 deg long.

SUPERNOVA 1987A IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD
J. B. Hearnshaw and J. Haar, University of Canterbury,
Christchurch, telex: "From Mt. John Observatory spectra, we have
found that the H-alpha emission earlier found to be strongly asymmetric
(IAUC 4352) has, since Mar. 22.32 UT, become double-peaked, with
the shorter-wavelength peak being the more intense. Emission peak
wavelengths were: Mar. 22.32, 657 and 669 nm; 24.36, 656 and 668
nm; 25.32, 657 and 668 nm; all +/- 1 nm. The longer wavelength may
be He I (667.8 nm)."
Further visual magnitude estimates: Mar. 25.49 UT, 3.8 (D. A.
J. Seargent, The Entrance, N.S.W.); 26.89, 4.0 (J. Campos, Durban,
R.S.A.); 27.38, 4.1 (G. Garradd, Tamworth, N.S.W.); 27.44, 3.9
(Seargent); 27.74, 3.9 (Campos); 28.81, 3.9 (Campos); 29.42, 3.7
(Garradd); 29.41, 3.8 (Seargent); 29.47, 3.6 (McNaught).
COMET WILSON (1986l)
Total visual magnitude estimates (B = binoculars): Mar. 9.73
UT, 7.3 (Garradd, 7x50 B); 13.25, 7.3 (M. Cliverd, Faraday Station,
Antarctica, 7x50 B); 25.08, 6.9 (Campos, 0.13-m refractor); 30.31,
6.9 (V. de Assis Neto, Sao Francisco de Oliveira, Brazil, 10x70 B).
