NOVA HERCULIS 1987
Y. Andrillat, Laboratoire d'Astronomie, Universite des
Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc, Montpellier; and L. Houziaux,
Institut d'Astrophysique, Universite de Liege, telex: "On a IIaO
plate (resolution 8 nm/mm) obtained on May 6 and 7 at Observatoire
de Haute Provence, Nova Her 1987 already reveals characteristic
features of the nebular stage 96 days after maximum. [O III] lines
are the most conspicuous features along with N III (464 nm); they
exhibit a peaked profile with a FWHM of 2100 km/s. Balmer lines H-beta
to H12 show a saddle-shaped emission typical of polar blobs geometry
viewed from an angle of 30 deg-40 deg; their widths indicate an
ejection velocity of about 2000 km/s. Emission at the Balmer limit is
clearly noticeable. Other weaker identified features include He II
(468.6 nm), N III (451 nm), C II (426.7 nm), [Ne III] (368.8 nm),
and [Ne V] (342.6 and 334.6 nm)."
Further visual magnitude estimates (cf. IAUC 4371): Apr.
10.09 UT, 10.8 (A. Pereira, Linda-A-Velha, Portugal); 18.10, 10.8
(Pereira); 22.06, 10.8 (P. Schmeer, Bischmisheim, West Germany);
26.09, 10.9 (Pereira); May 1.10, 11.0 (M. Verdenet, Bourbon-Lancy,
France); 8.15, 11.2 (Pereira); 12.15, 11.3 (Pereira).
SUPERNOVA 1987A IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD
P. Whitelock, South African Astronomical Observatory, reports
that SAAO photometry up to May 8 indicates that the V magnitude has
reached a maximum or plateau; the infrared and bolometric flux
continues to brighten, although the rate of brightening has decreased.
Provisional photoelectric photometry by A. Beresford, Adelaide,
S. Australia (0.20-m Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector): May 9.41 UT, V
= 2.89, B-V = +1.58. Visual magnitude estimates: May 9.41 UT, 2.9
(Beresford); 11.41, 2.8 (R. H. McNaught, Coonabarabran, N.S.W.).
AM HERCULIS
Visual magnitude estimates: 1986 Sept. 21.82 UT, 14.2 (R.
Monella, Covo, Italy); Oct. 5.8, 13.5 (A. Mizser, Budapest,
Hungary); Nov. 3.8, 14.2 (Mizser); Dec. 15.75, 13.5 (Monella); 1987
Feb. 21.1, 13.0 (Mizser); Apr. 25.87, 13.4 (M. Verdenet, Bourbon-
Lancy, France); 30.88, 13.1 (Verdenet).
