SUPERNOVAE
     A. V. Filippenko and J. Schachter, University of California
at Berkeley, report that CCD spectra (range 320-900 nm, resolution
1-2 nm) obtained on Jan. 14 with the Shane 3-m reflector at Lick
Observatory show SN 1987O (IAUC 4521, 4523, 4525) to be of type
Ia, roughly two months past maximum brightness. A spectrum (range
600-900 nm) of SN 1987P (IAUC 4523, 4525) indicates that this is
also a type Ia object, probably about two weeks past maximum.
Spectra obtained on 1987 Nov. 22 and Dec. 26 show that the type Ib
SN 1987M (IAUC 4459, 4470) has entered its supernebular phase (see
also IAUC 4518); extremely strong, broad emission lines of [O I]
630 nm, [Ca II] 730 nm and the Ca II near-infrared triplet were
visible. Also, the peculiar type II SN 1987F (IAUC 4381, 4385)
was still relatively bright on 1987 Dec. 26, with a spectrum dominated
by Balmer emission lines. The forbidden lines generally associated
with old supernovae were weak or absent, suggesting that
the density of the expanding gas is very high.

NOTICE TO CONTRIBUTORS
The computer CFA1 will be decommissioned in the near future,
and the BITNET/EARN address for electronic mail MARSDEN1@CFA1 will
therefore become inoperative. Starting immediately, this address
should be replaced by MARSDEN@CFA. Since CFA is not defined in
SPAN, electronic mail by SPAN should be sent to CFAPS2::MARSDEN or
to CFAPS1::BRIAN. For some purposes contributors may wish to
replace or supplement the above usernames MARSDEN and BRIAN by GREEN
and DAN, respectively. Communications that can be read using the
VAX/VMS MAIL instruction are preferred. The CBAT/MPC Computer
Service exists on both CFAPS1 and CFAPS2. Computer Service
subscribers who enter the system through modems now attached to CFA1
will receive instructions for future use when they log in.
