SUPERNOVAE 1988I AND 1988J IN ANONYMOUS GALAXIES
     A. V. Filippenko, University of California, Berkeley, writes:
"Spectra (range 310-930 nm, resolution 1-2 nm) obtained with the
Shane 3-m reflector (+ CCD spectrograph) at Lick Observatory on
Mar. 24 UT show that SN 1988I (cf. IAUC 4563) has broad (FWHM >
5000 km/s) H-alpha and H-beta emission lines at the redshift of the host
galaxy (z = 0.035), superposed on a relatively featureless continuum.
The object is therefore a type-II supernova, probably several
months past maximum brightness. Its spectral characteristics,
however, are peculiar, resembling those of SN 1987F long past maximum
(IAUC 4529). Spectra obtained on Mar. 25 with the same instrument
reveal that SN 1988J (IAUC 4568) is a type-Ia supernova less than
one month past maximum."
     C. Pollas, CERGA Observatory, Caussols, provides the following
measurements of SN 1988I: R.A. = 10h18m17.06, Decl. = +35 54'38.00 (equinox
1950.0); center of galaxy: R.A. = 10h18m16.55, Decl. = +35 54'36.55.

NEW X-RAY SOURCE
     F. Makino, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science,
telexes: "The x-ray astronomy satellite Ginga has detected a new x-
ray source at R.A. = 17h34m, Decl. = -27.5 (equinox 1950.0; uncertainty +/-
0.1) on 1988 Mar. 21-22. The x-ray spectrum is very soft with a
blackbody temperature of 0.5 keV. The intensity is 0.06 cts/s/cm2
in the range 1.5-4 keV. The source was also found in scanned data
observed on 1987 Mar. 28, when the intensity was about 0.1 cts/s/cm2 in
the same energy band."
