PERIODIC COMET TEMPEL 2 (1987g)
R. M. West, European Southern Observatory, reports: "On a series of
short V exposures (seeing 1".2) on May 16.3 UT with a CCD on the 1.5-m
Danish Telescope at La Silla this comet is seen to be highly active. A
fanshaped dust tail extends over p.a. 230 to 290 deg, with denser parts
at the edges and also at p.a. 260 deg. The 230- to 260-deg sector can
be followed to at least 35" from the asymmetric, diffuse coma. The B
images show a faint, short extension near p.a. 290 deg. The activity
has presumably begun since mid-April (cf. IAUC 4582)."
