SUPERNOVA 1988Z IN MCG +03-28-022
     S. Heathcote, Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory, reports: "A
spectrum of this object was obtained on Dec. 17 by A. Cowley and D.
Hartwick using the 4.0-m telescope RC spectrograph and the 2D-Frutti
photon-counting system. This spectrum, which covers the range 376-604
nm at a resolution of 0.4 nm, shows a very blue, almost featureless
continuum, upon which are superposed narrow nebular emission lines.
The object is therefore most probably of type II, at or before maximum
light. The only feature apparent in the continuum is a broad shallow
depression running from 400 to 470 nm. Nebular lines at 497.0, 443.7,
381.1 and 511.7 nm are identified as H beta, H gamma, [O II] 372.7 nm
and [O III] 500.7 nm, respectively. This leads to a redshift for the
host galaxy of 0.022."
