PULSAR IN W44
     A. Wolszczan, National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, Arecibo;
J. M. Cordes, Cornell University; R. J. Dewey, Jet Propulsion Laboratory;
and M. Blaskiewicz, Cornell University, report: "We have discovered a
267-ms pulsar located 5 arcmin south of the center of the supernova
remnant W44 (G34.7-0.4), well within the boundaries of its radio shell.
Observations made on Nov. 23 and 25 with the Arecibo radio telescope at
1.4 GHz were analyzed at the Cornell National Supercomputer Facility.
The currently available parameters of the pulsar are as follows: R.A. =
18h53m36.0s, Decl. = +1d09m00s (equinox 1950.0; accuracy limited by the
3-arcmin size of the telescope beam), dispersion measure = 98 +/- 8 pc
cm-3, P = 0.26739866 +/- 0.00000008 s, epoch = JD 2447514.21, mean
flux density at 1418 MHz = 0.8 +/- 0.2 mJy. Timing observations to
measure the pulsar's spindown rate and to improve the above parameters
are in progress."

SUPERNOVA 1988Z IN MCG +03-28-022
     J. Zamorano, Departamento de Astrofisica, Universidad Complutense,
Madrid, reports that preliminary reduction of a spectroscopic observation
(range 390-700 nm, east-west slit, resolution 0.6 nm/pixel) on Dec.
19.1 UT (75-min exposure) with the Boller and Chivens Cassegrain spectrograph
and RCA CCD on the 2.2-m telescope at the Calar Alto German-Spanish
Observatory shows the bright blue spectrum of the supernova on the
eastern side of the galaxy. Narrow emission lines due to H beta (at 496
nm), He I (599 nm) and H alpha (670 nm) indicate a redshift of z = 0.02.

PERIODIC COMET TEMPEL 2 (1987g)
     Total visual magnitude estimates: Nov. 5.77 UT, 9.3 (R. Haver, Rome,
Italy, 15 x 80 binoculars); 12.15, 10.2 (A. Hale, Las Cruces, NM, 0.41-m
reflector); 14.07, 9.6 (R. Keen, Mt. Thorodin, CO, 0.32-m reflector);
27.12, 10.4 (Hale); Dec. 3.11, 10.6 (Hale); 5.05, 9.6 (Keen); 11.10,
10.7 (C. S. Morris, Pine Mountain Club, CA, 0.26-m reflector); 12.09,
11.4 (Hale).
