NOVA SCORPII 1989
     H. W. Duerbeck and T. Augusteijn, European Southern Observatory,
report: "Spectra (resolving power about 1500) of Nova Sco 1989 were
obtained on Aug. 19.0 UT at the ESO 1.5-m telescope and 3.5-m New
Technology Telescope. They indicate an early post-maximum stage, with
H, He I, N I, N II, O I, Na I, Ca II and numerous Fe II lines in
emission (FWHM 1400 km/s). Na I D, O I 777.2 nm and the higher Balmer
series also show blueshifted absorption lines (velocity -1250 km/s).
Spectra taken on Aug. 20.0 show no noticeable changes. The rapid
spectral development since flareup and the radial velocities are
typical for a fast nova. The position, relative to Perth 70 SRS 14500,
as determined from the 3.5-m NTT encoders, is R.A. = 17h48m33s.8, Decl.
= -32d31'18" (equinox 1950.0)."
     R. H. McNaught, Siding Spring Observatory, communicates
prediscovery (on a V745 Sco exposure) and current magnitude estimates
obtained with the Uppsala Southern Schmidt: Aug. 10.38 UT, 14:, 20.6,
11.0:. He adds that Survey films show nothing in this position to mag
19 or fainter.
