V745 SCORPII
     J. Spyromilio and P. Whitelock, Anglo-Australian Observatory;
P. Meikle and G. Varani, Imperial College, London; and M. Feast,
South African Astronomical Observatory, telex: "Spectra (resolution
500) of V745 Sco were obtained at the Anglo-Australian Telescope
in the J, K, and L' windows on Oct. 11. The spectra show
strong He (1083 nm) and weaker Paschen beta and Brackett gamma,
all in emission. The continuum in the J window rises toward longer
wavelengths. The first overtone of CO is strong in absorption and
presumably results from the companion star, possibly an M star (cf.
IAUC 4844). The L' spectrum is approximately flat and featureless
but of poorer signal-to-noise ratio. Photometry at SAAO yields:
Aug. 28, J = 9.98, H = 8.74, K = 8.20, L = 7.51; Oct. 17, 9.99,
8.71, 8.23, 7.79."

UV PERSEI
     A. Udalski, York University, Toronto, and Warsaw University
Observatory; and J. A. Mattei, AAVSO, report: "The dwarf nova UV
Per is undergoing a long outburst. The star has been brighter than
mag 13 since Oct. 16 (cf. IAUC 4880). Three sets of observations
were obtained using the 0.61-m/0.48-m twin photometric system of the
David Dunlap Observatory during Oct. 22-24. Periodic light variations
(superhumps) with an amplitude up to 0.3 mag were discovered.
Based on 10 maxima timings, the preliminary superhump period is
about 95.5 min. The discovery of superhumps during the long eruption
(superoutburst) indicates that UV Per is a new member of the
SU UMa subclass of dwarf novae."
Further visual magnitude estimates: Oct. 18.75 UT, 11.7 (P.
Schmeer, Bischmisheim, W. Germany); 19.74, 12.5 (E. Schweitzer,
Strasbourg, France); 21.98, 12.7 (G. Dyck, N. Dartmouth, MA); 22.20,
12.1 (J. Griese, Rocky Hill, CT); 22.75, 13.0 (Schweitzer); 23.13,
12.8 (M. Heifner, Denver, CO); 23.29, 11.9 (Griese); 24.40, 11.9 (C.
Scovil, Stamford, CT); 26.00, 12.9 (A. Mizser, Budapest, Hungary).

R CORONAE BOREALIS
Visual magnitude estimates by J. E. Bortle, Stormville, NY (cf.
IAUC 4860): Sept. 25.15 UT, 7.6; Oct. 5.1, 6.9; 24.1, 6.6.
