GAMMA RAY OBSERVATORY
     G. Fishman, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, reports:
"The Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) is scheduled for launch by the
space shuttle Atlantis in April. One of the instruments on GRO,
the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE), has an all-sky
capability and a relatively quick data retrieval and processing
time. Locations of strong gamma-ray bursts should be
obtainable within several days with a location accuracy of about
1 deg. Hard x-ray and gamma-ray transients can also be
detected, as well as major flares of known high energy objects,
above 25 keV. Ground-based observers with active research
programs that can utilize this locational capability will be
able to access it through an e-mail BATSE News Service (BNS).
This service will also provide experiment status information
and recent findings from the BATSE/GRO. Persons interested in
accessing this service should respond via SPAN to BATSE::BNEWS.
A short description of the research interests and the observational
capabilities of the subscriber would be beneficial. For more
general updates on the GRO Mission and instruments, E. Chipman
(GRO Science Support Center, Goddard Space Flight Center)
reports that a GRO Bulletin Board is now available. To read
the Bulletin Board from a SPAN node, type SET HOST GROSSC and
answer GRONEWS at the USERNAME prompt. Internet users should
type telnet grossc.gsfc.nasa.gov and respond to the USERNAME
prompt with GRONEWS as above."
