DETECTION OF THE OPTICAL REMNANT OF THE SUPERNOVA OF 1006
     S. van den Bergh, David Dunlap Observatory, reports that a
delicate wisp of filamentary nebulosity has been found about 10'
north-northwest of the radio position of the Lupus supernova of
1006. Its center is at R.A. = 14h59m06s, Decl. = -41o32'.1 (equinox
1950.0). Red and blue plates obtained with the 400-cm reflector at
Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory show that the nebulosity
appears as bright in the red (098 + RG1) as in the green (IIIa-J +
GG 13). The length of the nebulous filaments is about 9', and its
thickness varies from about 1" to 8" in regions where it is double.
The morphology of the filaments is very reminiscent of that of the
optical remnant of the type I supernova of 1572.

COMET VAN DEN BERGH (1974 XII)

Schwartz and C. Y. Shao with the 155-cm reflector at Harvard
