3C 279
     M. Urry, Space Telescope Science Institute, writes: "Ultraviolet
spectra of the flaring quasar 3C 279 were obtained with the
International Ultraviolet Explorer during July 5.17-5.58 UT, just
prior to Ginga x-ray observations (IAUC 4626, 4628). No lines were
apparent in the low-resolution IUE spectra and the continuum was
quite bright, with energy flux (3.3 +/- 0.4) x 10E-11 erg cm-2 s-1
between 123 and 300 nm with best-fit power-law energy index 1.6 +/- 0.2.
The extrapolated ultraviolet spectrum falls below the observed x-ray
spectrum reported by Makino et al. (IAUC 4626), and the x-ray spectral
index is considerably flatter, as might be expected for the Compton
component in an SSC model. Contemporaneous optical photometry
indicates that at the time of the ultraviolet and x-ray observations,
the quasar was relatively bright: J. Webb at the Rosemary Hill
Observatory reports the following photographic magnitudes: June 8,
14.7 +/- 0.4; 9, 14.5 +/- 0.1; 14, 14.3 +/- 0.1; 17, 14.7 +/- 0.2; July 8,
13.8 +/- 0.2; 10, 14.1 +/- 0.1; 17, 14.0 +/- 0.2; 19, 14.2 +/- 0.2.
Thus despite reported fading (IAUC 4630), 3C 279 was again flaring at
the beginning of July."
