COMET OKAZAKI-LEVY-RUDENKO (1989r)
New orbital elements on MPC 15520 by S. Nakano, Center for
Astrophysics, yield 1/a = -0.000462 +/- 0.000034 AU**-1. B. G.
Marsden derives from this an 'original' value of -0.000218 AU**-1
but remarks that allowance for nongravitational forces could make
the orbit elliptical.
     J. Luu, Massachusetts Insititute of Technology; and D. Jewitt,
Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii, report the
submillimeter continuum detection of the object during Nov. 18-24 with
the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on Mauna Kea. This is apparently
the first dynamically new comet to be detected in the submillimeter
range. The detected 0.8-mm flux densities (20" diaphragm) varied
with time in the estimated range 40 +/- 8 mJy (Nov. 18.8 UT) to
130 +/- 35 mJy (Nov. 22.8 UT). The flux densities imply a mass of
the order 10E8 kg contributed by millimeter-sized and larger particles.
Total visual magnitude estimates (cf. IAUC 4908): Nov. 21.50
UT, 5.8 (R. A. Keen, Mt. Thorodin, CO, 8x40 binoculars; 1.5-deg
tail in p.a. 310 deg); 22.43, 5.9 (J. E. Bortle, Stormville, NY,
10x50 binoculars; 0.85-deg tail in p.a. 312 deg); 23.25, 5.7 (A.
Pereira, Cabo da Roca, Portugal, 9x34 binoculars); 24.19, 6.2 (P.
Schmeer, Bischmisheim, W. Germany, 20x80 binoculars); 25.54, 5.2
(C. S. Morris, Pine Mountain Club, CA, 20x80 binoculars; 2-deg
tail in p.a. 294 deg); 26.24, 5.7 (J. D. Shanklin, Cambridge,
England, 7x50 binoculars); 27.20, 5.8 (A. Boattini, Florence,
Italy, 10x50 binoculars); 29.48, 6.0 (G. Kronk, Troy, IL, 20x80
binoculars; 40' tail in p.a. 313 deg).
